Sanctuary 2017 – Creative Evaluation Commission
Sanctuary 2017 is offering a commission for an artist or artists to undertake a creative evaluation of this year’s event.
Sanctuary is a unique 24-hour public art event exploring darkness, technology and place in the stunning landscape of the Galloway Forest Dark Skies Park. The event is a laboratory for off-grid creative experimentation in a remote setting.
Sanctuary creates a space for participatory artworks that range from digital and sound works to radio transmissions, video and performance, and runs experimental labs, lectures and open conversations. The event brings together artists and members of the public with an interest in place and creative participatory experimentation.
We are seeking proposals for innovative strategies for the collection of information/material onsite that allows us insight into the journey and experience of the Sanctuary audience and artists. The process of engaging with audience and artists is as much part of the artwork as the information gathered. We would like the artwork to have a life and purpose beyond pure documentation, that explores the experience of taking part in Sanctuary and what those experiences might mean within the wider cultural context.
Sanctuary attracts an audience of all ages and both audience and artists can camp onsite creating a temporary community and sense of creative collaboration. It is this sense of community as well as the experience of Sanctuary that we want to explore and capture with this commission.
The evaluation artwork / process would take place during Sanctuary and elements may be presented during the event. The artwork and information should be made available to the Sanctuary curators after the event in an accessible form, to be used in post event de briefings and reports. We are open as to the media that may be used.
Timescale for the delivery of the collected material would be negotiated with the artist and would take account of the specificities of media and production methods, but would be expected by end October 2017.
Please note that the site is remote and is off grid and off network. Sanctuary may be able to help with power and shelter but the challenges of the location will have to be considered when making proposals.
